The World Gold Council and OCIM Metals and Mining have signed an MoU to formalize artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), with a focus on traceability, due diligence, environmental standards and centralized processing. The initiative is aimed at bringing more legitimate ASGM output into the formal global supply chain while reducing illicit trade, mercury pollution and unsafe labour practices.

The partnership combines WGC’s standards and market-infrastructure expertise with OMM’s operating model for centralized processing plants. WGC says the work will feed into its Gold Processing Initiative, which is designed to pilot formalization models in host countries and create blueprint frameworks for policymakers, investors and buyers. OMM already has partnerships across more than 200 small-scale mining operations in Peru and expects to produce 1,000 kg of gold by year-end.

For the market, this is a supply-chain and compliance story rather than an immediate price catalyst, but it matters for the quality and provenance of incremental gold supply. Over time, tighter upstream control and banking-grade compliance could make ASGM output more financeable and more acceptable to large buyers, while also shrinking the share of opaque metal in the physical market.

Near term, traders should watch whether the model is replicated in other producing regions and whether it attracts formal buyer support or policy backing. Any measurable increase in traceable ASGM volumes would be a medium-term supply-positive development for the formal market, though the immediate price impact is likely limited.
