Heritage’s March 26-28 U.S. Coins Signature auction totaled $11.95mn, with strong bidding for rare early American gold and historic bullion pieces. The top lot was a 1796/5 BD-1 Half Eagle in MS64 NGC at $256,200, followed by an 1879 Flowing Hair Stella PR65 Cameo at $201,300 and an 1825 BD-2 Quarter Eagle MS66 at $164,700. Heritage said the results reaffirm demand among collectors for important early U.S. gold issues. The sale also highlighted the continued pull of condition rarities and shipwreck bullion. A 1920-S Indian Head Eagle MS63 PCGS brought $146,400, while S.S. Central America-recovered gold ingots drew solid interest, including an 18.60-ounce Justh & Hunter ingot at $146,400 and two Kellogg & Humbert ingots at $146,400 and $140,300. The auction referenced very tight surviving populations for several lots, including estimates as low as 80-100 examples for some early gold varieties. For the desk, this is more a read-through on collector appetite than a spot-market signal, but it reinforces that premium physical gold remains highly liquid in the numismatic channel even when tied to historical scarcity rather than bullion pricing. Near-term, watch whether strong results continue for pre-1834 U.S. gold and shipwreck bullion, which can support secondary-market pricing for high-grade rarities regardless of broader macro moves.
