Heritage’s April 29-May 2 CSNS auctions generated $46.4m combined, led by an 1879 Coiled Hair stella that sold for $2.135m, more than 45% above the previous record of $1.464m set in January 2026. The sale also included a 1933 Indian Eagle at $1.586m, plus record results for an 1880 Coiled Hair stella ($854k) and 1880 Flowing Hair stella ($777.8k), underscoring continued deep bidding for ultra-rare U.S. gold numismatic pieces. Heritage said the Coiled Hair stella drew 59 bids, with Todd Imhof describing the sale as evidence of “the depth of demand at the highest levels of the market.” The auction’s broader totals included $26.9m for U.S. Coins, $11.9m for World & Ancient Coins, and $7.6m for U.S. Currency, pointing to strong collector liquidity across multiple segments rather than a single trophy lot. For metals desks, the read-through is more about physical collectables/numismatic demand than spot gold fundamentals, but the record prices may reinforce the resilience of high-end U.S. gold coin demand even in a volatile macro backdrop. Near-term, watch whether these results spill over into other premium vintage gold issues and whether fresh inventory from major collections continues to meet aggressive bidding.
